Mares of Walkers on Water

As the song goes, "the fire of a mare and the strength of a stud."  Foals get half their genes from their moms so it is important to have quality mares.  Not only genes factor in however.  That foal is going to spend it's first five to six months with that mare and will learn a lot from her.  Not to downplay the importance of having a good stallion, but I feel that mares have a greater impact on the outcome of the foals.  As much as I think of my mares, I am blessed with many that outproduce themselves producing absolutely amazing foals.  I love my mares!!

In keeping with the trail horse job description, my mares have good bone and great feet.  Other qualities I look for include a gentle nature, willingness, agility, and strength.  I don't mind a spirited mare as long as she is a willing partner. All of my mares that are old enough to ride have been started and have time in the mountains.  Some will spend more time on the trail than others for no particular reason than that they are exceptional  mothers or a favorite riding horse of mine.

Foals are imprinted at birth and handled on a daily basis.  By weaning they halter, lead, tie, can be touched anywhere, load in a trailer and pick up their feet. They are introduced to clippers which some take to more readily than others.

For the past several years, most of my foals have been spoken for prior to birth.  If you are looking for a future trail partner with some size and a great temperment, please let me know.  I keep lists or there may be one that hasn't been taken as people's circumstances change.
